If your business plans to import goods into India or export goods out of it, there's one registration you cannot trade without: the Import Export Code, or IEC.
What is an IEC?
The IEC is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), required for any business or individual involved in international trade of goods. Without it, customs authorities will not clear your shipments, and banks will not process related international payments.
Who needs one
Any business - proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company - that wants to import or export goods commercially needs an IEC. It's a one-time registration, not a recurring filing, which makes it relatively low-effort once done.
What it's based on
The IEC is linked to your business's PAN, so each PAN gets one IEC, applicable across all your business locations.
When you don't need one
Certain categories are exempt - for example, import/export for personal use, not connected to trade or manufacturing. But if you're building an actual import or export business, you'll need it.
How registration works
The application is filed online through the DGFT portal, with basic business documents (PAN, address proof, bank details) and a modest government fee. Processing is generally quick if the documents are in order.
Why it matters even for small exporters
Many small businesses - handicrafts, textiles, food products- start exporting on a small scale without realising IEC is required from the very first shipment, not just at a certain size. Getting it early avoids delays when a real export opportunity comes up.
Note: DGFT requirements, documents, and fees can be updated. Always confirm current details on the official DGFT portal or with a professional before applying.
